A Quiet Decision Sparks a Community Uprising

a fight for transparency, accountability, and genuine community power

A group of dogs gathered outdoors at Monte Cecilia Park, some looking up attentively, with people in the background.

The Puketāpapa Local Board voted to restrict off-leash access, despite overwhelming public support to keep it open.

This decision was made:

  • Despite 88% of public submissions opposing the change (over 800 voices!)

  • Council staff recommending off-leash access be retained

  • A petition with more than 1,000 signatures asking to retain the off-leash area

  • And without releasing the “Dog Walking Assessment” until after the vote

This isn’t just about dogs — it’s about democracy, transparency, and listening to the people who live here. We deserve better from our elected officials.

What We’re Standing For

We’re not just resisting a rule change.

We’re standing up for:

  • Community voice: Decisions should reflect the people who use and love this park.

  • Common sense: The bowl is safe, well-used, and easily improved with better signage.

  • Joyful spaces: Parks should bring people together—not push them apart.

LET’S DEMAND BETTER

Four current Puketāpapa Local Board members voted in favour of restricting off-leash access at Monte Cecilia Park.

The board is currently led by Communities and Residents (C & R), a political ticket that, based on recent decisions, may not fully reflect the views of our diverse, engaged community.

We believe it’s time for a more transparent, responsive approach — one that truly listens to the people who live, walk, and play here every day.

Let’s Vote for Better

With local elections starting 9 September 2025, we have a powerful opportunity to shape the future.

Let’s support candidates who listen, who care, and who believe in the power of community.

Together, we can protect Monte Cecilia Park’s off-leash bowl and build a more inclusive, transparent future.
